Carbon Monoxide Gas Applications: Used as fuel, reducing agent, raw material in organic synthesis, preparation of carbonyl metals, phosgene, thiocarbonyl, aromatic aldehydes, formic acid, hexahydroxybenzene, aluminum chloride, methanol; used in hydroformylation; preparation of synthetic gasoline (hydrocarbon synthesis), synthetic alcohols (carboxylic acids, ethanol, aldehydes, ketones, and hydrocarbon mixtures); zinc white pigment; alumina film formation; calibration gas; online instrumentation.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Carbon Monoxide Gas: Carbon monoxide is flammable, reducing, and toxic. Under normal conditions, it is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas, poorly soluble in water, with a melting point of -207°C and a boiling point of -191.5°C. The gas density under standard conditions is 1.25 g/L, which is very close to the density of air (1.293 g/L under standard conditions), contributing to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Precautions for Carbon Monoxide Gas: As carbon monoxide is a flammable compressed gas, it should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse. The temperature in the warehouse should not exceed 30°C. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Avoid direct sunlight. It should be stored separately from oxygen, compressed air, halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine), and oxidizers. Do not store or transport together. Lighting and ventilation facilities in the storage area should be explosion-proof, with switches located outside the warehouse. Equip with appropriate types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment. Avoid using mechanical tools that may generate sparks. During inspection, pay attention to the product name and the cylinder inspection date; use the first-in-first-out principle. Handle with care during transportation to prevent damage to cylinders and attachments.

Therefore, carbon monoxide is toxic. Because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, it is easily overlooked, leading to poisoning. Common cases occur in poorly ventilated homes due to gas from coal stoves, gas leaks from liquefied petroleum gas pipelines, industrial production gas, or inhalation of carbon monoxide in mines.
